(Letter from the Chief of Police)
I am proud to serve Nevada, Mo as Chief of Police and to be a part of this ever-growing community. Dating back to the 1850’s on the American Frontier, Nevada, MO law enforcement consisted only of the elected Town Marshal. After more than 150 years of service to the community, the members of this department continue to protect and serve the citizens well into the 21st century. We’ve come a long way.
We not only have several divisions within the Police Department, but there are a variety of community based programs that are provided, as well.. (List is not all inclusive)
• Crises Intervention Team (CIT) – A Law enforcement initiative implemented in strong collaboration with mental health and emergency medicine organizations, that recruit, train and support police officers to respond effectively when individuals are experiencing acute psychiatric distress.
• Neighborhood Watch - The Nevada Neighborhood Watch is a crime prevention program which enlists the active participation of citizens of particular neighborhoods, in cooperation with the Police Department to help reduce crime in our community.
• Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) - The Nevada Police Officers participate in something positive to support our community. They donate time and effort to raise funds for the charity of choice for Missouri Law Enforcement. Today, the LETR is held in 50 states and 35 countries around the world. The event raises $22 million annually and recruits more than 15,000 law enforcement officers from all over the world.
• Missouri Law Enforcement Agency State Certification – Working with the Missouri Police Chief’s Association, the Nevada Police Department is undergoing a process to update, modernize and reorganize all police department policies and procedures using established professional standards that are aligned with professional law enforcement organizations across the state.
It is the mission of the Nevada Police Department to deliver productive quality services for all citizens of our community. All department members are dedicated to helping citizens and families improve their neighborhood environment and improve the quality of life through our departmental efforts.
Preventing crime is our first operational priority. However, we understand that building, cultivating and maintaining the community’s trust is the key element in crime reduction within our city.
We are committed to reducing crime in our neighborhoods by establishing close partnerships with our residents and business community. Community Policing is not only a philosophy but an organizational strategy that promotes partnerships between people and their police. It is based on the premise that both police and the citizens must work together to identify, prioritize, and solve community problems.
I submit to you that the men and women of the Nevada Police Department will be diligent in our efforts to identify and arrest criminals, and help our citizens develop long-term solutions to community challenges.
