:: Area Medical Services
The Nevada area is blessed with a substantial medical community commonly found only in much larger cities.

The Nevada area is blessed with a substantial medical community commonly found only in much larger cities. Extensive specialties, treatments and procedures are available within a 30-mile radius bringing quality care to residents. New family clinics have been established in outlying Rich Hill and Sheldon with another planned for Liberal in the future.

Nearly one third of the regional workforce is employed in the medical or allied health services industry. A prominent force since the turn of the century, the Nevada State School and Hospital closed its doors in 1991, allowing many other clinical and residential care programs to assume the healthcare roles. Most recently, a new Veterans’ Clinic opened its doors offering regional outpatient benefits to the more than 14,000 eligible veterans within the service area between Kansas City and Springfield hospitals. A new physician’s park with multiple expansion opportunities was completed near the community-owned Nevada Regional Medical Center on South Ash. After extensive remodeling and upgrades, the hospital is to provide even better use of the 51-bed acute care and outpatient facilities. The Medical Center operates the Barone Alzheimer’s Care Center, a 36-bed nursing facility on the North Campus, for the specialized care of patients with Alzheimer’s disease. Additionally, there is a 120-bed complete nursing home facility attached to the hospital. For over 30 years the Nevada Medical Clinic professionals have cared for area residents. Numerous medical facilities offer exceptional levels of caring service for virtually any medical problem. An added value of medical care in Nevada is the level of personal concern that comes as part of the services.

Area health care providers are organized in a variety of clinics, group practices, state agencies, and individual offices. The largest of those facilities include: Heartland Behavioral Health Services, a 162-bed private psychiatric treatment facility serving children, & adolescents populations-located in the former St. Francis Convent; Nevada Habilitation Center, licensed to provide both long and short term specialized residential rehabilitation services for 230 mentally retarded and developmentally disabled persons; Southwest MO Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center provides outpatient services for persons with severe and persistent mental illnesses, children’s services and 24 hour emergency screening programs to over 550 clients in Vernon, Bates, Cedar and Hickory counties.
